1983/84 8 SAI including Ops Askari

MEMORIES OF MY SADF EXPERIENCES

Me having brunch whilst standing guard at the new Oshigambo (SWA/Namibia) base construction site October/November 1983. We were based at the old Oshigambo base at this time.

Me with a night adder that slithered into my trench at Xangongo (Angola) just before the commencement of Ops Askari. We had just stood down after a potential attack by MiGs and I had climbed into my trench to sleep when I saw the adder slithering onto my sleeping bag!)

Documentation for the issuing of a Patmor ramrod for my Patmor in Xangongo – Angola.

Russian propaganda found on a Russian vehicle captured after Ops Askari. We were guarding a bridge that was erected just south of Cuvalai.

Self explanatory. Found out on patrol whilst operating from the Nkongo/Okongo base in the latter part of 1984.

This document was found in the vicinity of Xangongo whilst we were on patrol of the area before the start of Ops Askari so it was somewhere between 18/12/1983 and just after Christmas 1983. Translation was done by a Portuguese speaking colleague.

Soldiers of FAPLA (People's Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola)

The enemy of the South African Forces is SWAPO (South West African Peoples Organisation). The South African Forces does not want the Angolan land (country) but, yes, they want peace in Namibia. The South African forces will continue to “finish” off SWAPO so that there is peace in Namibia.

SWAPO is scared of the South African Forces and now they run and hide between and in the middle of you. When we get near them, our forces, they run and leave you behind. SWAPO does not leave you with anything (leaves you with nothing). The South African Forces leave the way open for you.

Leave SWAPO behind so that they can fight their own battles.

Sign off of kit handed back when klaaring out of 8 SAI end of 1984.
